Fresno man accused of trying to run over police officer

FRESNO, Calif.

The suspect is identified as 21-year-old Lee Vang. Police say it appears he deliberately targeted the officer, who was standing next to a parked car near the intersection of Franklin and Humboldt in west central Fresno.

The incident happened just before two o'clock Thursday morning. Police say the officer lunged to safety but was hit by the vehicles side view mirror and was sent flying.

Fresno Police spokesman, Jeff Cardinale said, "The force of the impact was so great, that it actually caused the officer to flip up in the air and land very hard on the ground on his back."

Police say after hitting the officer, Vang got out of his vehicle and confronted other officers in the area. They subdued him with a bean bag fired from a shotgun. He was taken to the hospital and then jailed.

The officer was treated for his injuries at a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
