Deadly officer involved shooting in Fresno Co.

FRESNO, Calif.

It happened around 8 a.m., near the town of Malaga just off of Clovis Ave. and Malaga Ave.

Sherriff's officials and CHP officials are investigating the scene as it continues to unfold.

A suspected truck thief is dead after a CHP officer confronted him.

It all started when the owner of a dump truck reported that it stolen and decided to follow the driver to a dirt road between a tangerine grove and a grape vineyard right off of south Clovis Ave.

Sherriff's officials say GPS onboard that truck allowed the driver to keep track of his stolen vehicle.

A CHP officer happened to be in the area at the time and went to investigate the stopped truck and then confronted the driver.

"The officer walked up to the truck, there was nobody around the truck at the time. As he was checking the truck out the suspect walked out of the orchard and an altercation or fight ensued. During the fight the officer was injured, it continued for several seconds during which time the officer drew his handgun and shot the suspect," Fresno Co. Sherriff Chris Curtice said.

The Fresno County Sherriff's Office is investigating the incident for the Highway Patrol.

The CHP officer who was injured in the fight with the suspected truck thief sustained some moderate injuries. He was treated and taken away from the scene.

No word yet on why the dump truck was stolen in the first place.
