The institute says the clean-up of the tainted water supply may cost at least 150-million dollars. The study suggests poor families are forced to pay up to $100 a month for bottled water because the wells are contaminated by nitrates from fertilizers, sewage and animal waste. The study says 3-quarters of the state's nitrate violations in 2007 happened in the Central Valley.
