Over 40 killed in deadly storms across 6 states

Bertie County, N.C.

There are now more than 40 people reported dead following a wave of storms that ravaged the south over the weekend. The storms destroyed buildings, uprooted trees, tossed cars and trucks and killed people across six different states, from Oklahoma to Virginia

The storm prediction center said it received 230 reports of tornadoes over the past three days, though some of those were likely sightings of the same twister

North Carolina was particularly hard hit. At least 22 people were killed there.

Sunday the governor toured some of the hardest hit counties. "I've seen a lot of damage in North Carolina over the years but this is the most catastrophic I've ever seen, the destruction is massive. I've been in six counties, we will do more counties tomorrow, we have 23-counties that are hurt really really badly; tremendous property damage, schools lost, infrastructure damage," said North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue.

Clean up crews will have their work cut out for them Monday as they help the displaced, restore power to hundreds of thousands of people.
