The building was evacuated shortly before 10:00 a.m. when the smell of smoke triggered a fire alarm. Firefighters searched the building for about 30-minutes, but found no fire or threat of one. Some court officials and people at the courthouse reported a burning smell in the basement, first and second floors.

Malaga resident, Brandy Tovar said, "We were actually waiting to be called and we hear the alarms. We're thinking hey, is this some kind of a drill? And we're looking around at the employees. They're out the door. They don't even alarm us to get out. And we're coming down cause they've got kids in the daycare and they were scrambling to get out. I just think this whole thing's like crazy."

Firefighters never found the cause of the smell or any burned materials. People were allowed back in to the courthouse a short time later.
