A gentle giant visits Shaela Warkentin

FRESNO, Calif.

This is 16-year-old Shaela Warkentin with Max the Great Dane by her side.

Warkentin suffered serious head injuries in a crash in Northwest Fresno last month.

The injuries have left her unable to see but family members describe her progress to this point as a miracle.

Saturday night, they allowed Action News into Shaela's hospital room, as the big therapy dog brought a smile to her face.

"It's a breath of fresh air for us to be able to see her happy. You know, through the tragedy to see her smile. See her enjoy a part of normal life," Shaela's dad Ken Warkentin said.

"He has a natural temperament. He is a Champion Show dog but he's obedience trained. He's a certified K-9 good citizen, but what he does here with the kids, it just comes naturally to him, it's not the result of any training," Jim Maxwell said.

Max is a regular at Children's Hospital but made a trip to CRMC Saturday by special request.

He also stopped by other patient rooms to spread some Easter weekend cheer.
