The crash happened around 7:00 Monday morning on the southbound side of Highway 99 near Sierra Street. The California Highway Patrol says the woman hit by the big rig survived the crash.
Crews worked most of the day clearing up the mess that brought the morning commute for hundreds of drivers to a screeching halt. But one driver who survived the crash says this may have been the luckiest day of her life.
CHP investigators are looking into what caused the crash, why the driver drifted onto the shoulder in the first place. But once he did, because the shoulder is under construction that may have made it much more difficult to recover on the soft dirt. In fact last Tuesday, right across on the other side of this highway, there was a similar big rig accident when the driver drifted off onto the shoulder and lost control.
