5/18/11 Ag Report

FRESNO, Calif.

The US Department of Agriculture has moved three of its eleven cattle inspection stations from Mexico into Texas because of the violent drug cartels.

The stations check cattle being imported from Mexico.

The move is supposed to be temporary but some ranchers fear it could increase chance of parasites or cattle diseases being spread into the US.

The USDA says it's taken steps to protect cattle imports.

A canal break is cutting off water to northern California farms.

Cattle ranches and orchards in placer county face serious water shortages after a landslide damaged a canal.

Nurseries and vegetable farms are affected too.

The break also means at least 2,300 acres of rice will go unplanted in placer county this year.

Crews estimate repairs may not be finished until the end of june.
