6/6/2011 Ag Report

A Melon Fruit Fly infestation in Kern County is now over.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture set a 82-square-mile quarantine last summer when fruit flies threatened crops in the Valley. State ag officials set up traps to capture the insect.

The melon fly is native to Asia. Ag officials say the flies got into California from fruits and vegetables brought back illegally by travelers.
