6/6/2011 Ag Report

FRESNO, Calif.

Ag officials say 80-percent of field workers are illegal immigrants. Some farmers are worried their work force will disappear. They say it's difficult to find legal workers because farm work is hard labor for low pay.

A Melon Fruit Fly infestation in Kern County is now over.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture set a 82-square-mile quarantine last summer when fruit flies threatened crops in the Valley. State ag officials set up traps to capture the insect.

The melon fly is native to Asia. Ag officials say the flies got into California from fruits and vegetables brought back illegally by travelers.
