Boyfriend accused of killing girlfriend's father in Gustine

GUSTINE, Calif.

61-year-old Adam Sinegal was arrested Tuesday outside his home in Gustine.

The victim's daughter told Action News the incident began when she was arguing with her father. She said during the argument her boyfriend came out of a room and began stabbing her father in the neck.

The 62-year-old victim, Robert Smith, was found laying on the living room floor. "He was still alive when police arrived on scene," said Gustine Police Sgt. Jim Hamera.

Paramedics pronounced Smith dead just moments later. Family members, too upset to talk with Action News on camera Wednesday, said seven people live in the house. All seven, including several of the victim's grandchildren and great grandchildren were home when the stabbing happened.

Police said Sinegal is responsible for Smith's death. "He was outside when officers arrived on scene and was taken into custody almost immediately," Sgt. Hamera said. Sinegal now faces homicide and other charges.

Sgt. Hamera said homicides are rare in Gustine. Up until a few years ago, the city went about two decades without one.

This is the city's first homicide of 2011.
