ABC News confirms former First Lady Betty Ford has died

The widow of former U.S. President Gerald Ford served as first lady from 1974 to 1977. She was active in social policy, and shattered precedents - as a politically active first lady.

Ford also raised awareness of addiction when she announced her long running battle with alcoholism in the 1970's.

She founded the Betty Ford Center for Substance Abuse and Addiction in Rancho Mirage.
