Currently Associate Superintendent of Human Resources and Communications, Young served the students and community of Clovis Unified in a variety of positions including teacher, learning director, Principal of Fort Washington Elementary, and Director of Communications before moving into leadership of the district's 5,000-plus employees in the Human Resources Division. It was Young's strong foundation in the classroom and at school sites, combined with the breadth of her understanding of the District's business and human resources operations that made her stand out from a pool of highly qualified candidates.

According to Governing Board President Ginny Hovsepian, the selection process was extremely competitive given the experience, knowledge and integrity of the candidates under consideration. A pool of nine internal and external candidates were considered by the Board in early July, with four candidates invited to participated in both a community-employee panel interview and personal interviews with the Board. Interviews with the Board were held July 22, with members of the Board reaching agreement with Young Saturday afternoon.

"Before starting the superintendent search, the Board heard from many employees, parents and community members about their hopes and concerns for Clovis Unfied. These groups were unified in their desire for us to identify a candidate with a vision to lead Clovis Unified into the future, an understanding of the unique culture and mutual respect we have for each other in CUSD, and the strength and wisdom to steer the district through the difficult financial times facing California's public schools. With the appointment of Dr. Young the Board is confident we've found such a leader for Clovis Unified.

"We look forward to working with Janet, our team of outstanding certificated and classified employees, and our community as we move Clovis Unified ahead with energy and enthusiasm." Employees of the district were invited to the Board's special meeting Saturday through an automated phone call, with another call planned for Saturday evening to share news of Dr. Youngs' appointment as Superintendent.
