Train hits pedestrian in Northwest Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.

It happened just before 6 p.m. Sunday, near Shaw and Marks.

Fresno Police say the train was heading from Bakersfield to Oakland when it struck a man, killing him. Police say the man had been walking on the tracks with his back to the train and he didn't seem to notice the train approaching from behind.

"The conductor laid on the horn several times and the male for unknown reasons didn't get off the tracks or acknowledge the train was coming and he was struck by the train," said Lt. Tom Rowe with the Fresno Police Department.

175 Amtrak passengers were delayed at the scene for nearly two hours before continuing on to Oakland.
