The CHP told Action News the driver of a Honda Accord sped away from an officer sometime after 2:00pm.

The officer, CHP said, tried to pull the driver over a few blocks from the crash, because the car already had front-end damage.

Minutes later, the officer lost sight of the suspect car. But when the officer caught up to the suspect on Pullman the Honda and bus had already crashed.

The driver of the Honda still tried to run from CHP at that point. "The driver fled on foot and the officer was subsequently taken into custody," said CHP Lt Craig Kumzler.

The driver and his passenger are in custody. The CHP is trying to determine why the driver sped away in the first place.

As for the 68 children on the school bus, they were taken off the bus through the emergency exit to be put on a different school bus so they could be picked up by their parents.

The kids used the emergency exit door because the bus suffered damage to the front passenger side, where the children normally exit.

The CHP said it's unclear whether drugs or alcohol are factors in the crash. The names of the two people taken into custody have not been released.
