Nurses object to public health cuts

FRESNO, Calif.

Public health nurses are upset over county plans to cut the public health budget.

"It's unsafe, it's unfair to the most vulnerable in our community, we don't think it's a wise way to do cuts because many of the nurses are completely grant funded or almost entirely grant funded and so it doesnt make sense nurses would take the brunt of those cuts," public health nurse Kathleen Kelly said.

While most of the nurses pay comes from state and federal grants, the County believes it can't sustain its share of the program.

More than one hundred public health nurse positions have been cut in the past three years. The nurses are hoping the county supervisors will maintain what is left of the program.
