Students learn danger of texting behind the wheel

FRESNO, Calif.

Teenagers at Clovis High School got behind the wheel while texting on cell phones.

The simulated event took place in the school's parking lot.

A Clovis Police Officer sat next to each teen.

Teens drove through an obstacle course filled with cones while texting.

One student said the experience was eye-opening.

"If I were on the road, I would be swerving, going straight. I just don't recommend texting and driving, it's not safe," Antonio Mendez said.

Officials say the effort aimed to teach more than four-thousand teens to stop texting while driving.
