Police say it happened around 7:45 Wednesday night at the apartment complex on Parsons.
Investigators say the man then drove himself to Valero and Childs at Highway 99, where he was taken by helicopter to a Modesto-area hospital.
Police say the man is in his 20's and was last listed in critical but stable condition.
Police say the weapon has not been recovered and there does not appear to be surveillance video.
