Fresno housing development focuses on elderly

FRESNO, Calif.

Forkner Crest held its grand opening Saturday on Forkner Avenue, between Bullard and Barstow. The homes are constructed by Wathen Castanos and all feature hybrid technology for energy efficiency.

The gated community is exclusively for those over 55 years old. Its builders say it fills a specific need in the area.

"What we're doing is responding to a market niche in Northwest Fresno. There hasn't been a whole lot of new development in the Forkner Van Ness extension area so it fits well," said Peter Castanos.

Homes at Forkner Crest start at around $250-thousand. A total of 36 will be built at the development -- and nine houses have already been sold.
