Farmersville infant found in trash, mom due in court

FARMERSVILLE, Calif.

A candle and several children's toys have been placed in front of this home on Shasta Avenue in Farmersville -- as a memorial for a baby girl found dead in a trash can at the house Monday night.

Investigators say the full-term newborn was discovered by a family member at the house who then called police. Officers say the mother of the baby is 24-year-old Danielle Downing.

Lt. Mike Marquez said, "At this time we do not know who the father is of the child but I'm sure in time we will be able to determine who that is and we'll be speaking to him also."

Farmersville Police say this isn't the first time they've been to the house for a criminal investigation. Twice in August officers were at the house for two separate incidents.

Lt. Mike Marquez said, "On August 13 we were there for some type of an assault case that had come up for further follow up and we were there the following day on the 14th of August for a verbal disturbance that was taking place at that residence."

Family members at the house refused to comment but Downing could be in court as early as Thursday.

Action News has learned an emergency custody hearing is expected to take place preventing the mom from seeing one of her other two children.

Danielle Downing was expected to start visitation with her 3-year-old son on Friday. The boy's father, who did not want to go on camera, says he is concerned for his son's safety.

The autopsy of Downing's newborn girl is scheduled for Friday morning. The results are crucial to the police department's investigation. The community in Farmersville hopes it brings answers to what happened.

Lt. Mike Marquez said, "It's very important the autopsy is going to prove or disprove any type of foul play and hopefully determine and give us a cause of death."

Santiago Montoya, Farmersville said, "People are mostly hoping for justice for the baby you know."

Police say they have received several tips into the department on the case. They are expecting to have more information once the autopsy is conducted on Friday.
