WIC program faces possible cuts

FRESNO, Calif.

Families under the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) program can use vouchers to buy milk, fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods. Supporters are asking congress to protect the federal program from funding cuts.

The WIC program serves over 1.5 million people in California.

"The loss of jobs. We have people searching for assistance for the very first time. They've never needed our assistance and now they're at our doorstop asking for help," said WIC program director Linda Shelton.

"Of all the discretionary programs that are on the table the WIC program is not the one to cut because it's going to cost taxpayers more to clean up the mess if they cut the program," said Laurie True with the California WIC Association.

Currently, over $733-million in WIC funds are in danger of being eliminated.
