Sanger teacher accused of rape

FRESNO, Calif.

48-year-old Sergio Heredia was taken into custody early Tuesday morning.

Heredia teaches social studies at Sanger High School. We do not know if his victim is a student there.

The rape case surrounding Sanger High School teacher Sergio Heredia first came to light Monday night.

Sanger Police say officers received a call from someone claiming Heredia had just assaulted a minor.

Within hours, investigators took him into custody.

Corporal Robert Theile said, "We are definitely concerned with providing safety for all the school kids and that's why we put so much into this case to make sure that we did it right and as quickly as possible."

Heredia teaches social studies at Sanger High School.

He also owns the Sports Bistro in Downtown.

The business was closed Tuesday, but neighbors tell Action News they saw investigators inside during the morning hours.

Theile said, "Suspect was arrested just after midnight and search warrants were written and secured for two locations in the city of Sanger."

Heredia is facing four charges. Among them: unlawful sex with a minor, sexual penetration using a foreign object, rape by force and sexual battery.

Parents and Sanger High Students we spoke to are in disbelief.

Vanessa Guzman said, "I was shocked, I was really shocked, and I asked my daughter and she doesn't have that teacher and I'm really glad."

At this point, investigators do not believe there are any other victims.

They're urging anyone with information to come forward.

Meanwhile, Sanger Unified officials say they are working with police and that the appropriate action will be taken.

Sanger High School is not in session this week because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Heredia is being held on a $130 thousand bail in the Fresno County jail.
