Pets killed as car crashes into Fresno home

FRESNO, Calif.

Police are searching for two people who crashed the car and then ran away.

It happened on east Drummond near Clara Avenue in Southwest Fresno Wednesday morning.

The crash killed a dog the family has had and loved for years, and also one of her puppies.

Family members are devastated, but they are thankful no one was inside the room when the car came crashing through.

Skid marks show where the Mazda MX6 slammed through a chain link fence and into the room where Jose Hernandez's parents sleep. His little sister also often stays in the room, but fortunately it was empty at the time of the crash.

"I went to see my mom's room. The car was there. Then I was just shocked. I saw the guy too," Hernandez said.

Hernandez says the driver and a passenger ran away, leaving a mess behind. Police showed up to process the scene, and a tow truck removed the car, leaving a gaping hole behind.

But family members say the damage is not the worst part was that the crash also killed their German Shepherd and one of her puppies.

"I was sad because I've had that dog for a very long time for years, since before I even came to this house. I'm really sad about that," Jose Hernandez said.

Four other month-old puppies survived. Hernandez's cousin came to pick them up, and was shocked to see the damage for herself.

"I just think whoever did it, to just do it and take off, not even to say are you okay, did we hurt somebody, that's just cowards, to run away," Lucy Vazquez said.

The Red Cross is now helping the seven family members until the landlord can repair the home.

"They'll be staying in a hotel. They're not able to stay with family, and so we're going to put them up in a hotel for a couple of days and also give them food until they can get back in their home," Katrina Poitras of the American Red Cross said.

Now Hernandez says he just hopes the driver is caught.

"He deserves to go to jail for what he did," Hernandez said.

Police have not yet said if the people responsible for the crash may be wanted for any other crimes.
