Officer-involved shooting in Merced, 1 killed, 2 injured

MERCED, Calif.

The Merced Police Department says they got a tip that someone had a gun at a party on Buckingham Court just before 11 o'clock on Saturday night. Police say two officers responded to the call and headed to the scene. Detectives say the officers heard a sound described as the slide of a hand-gun when the gun is gearing up to fire. Lt. Andre Matthews with the Merced Police Department says, "They saw that the man was holding a handgun. The officers told the man to put his handgun down. He refused to do so and he turned and pointed the gun at the officers, at that point and the officers fired."

Neighbor, Denise Pursley hid indoors with her husband and daughter while shots were fired. Merced Police say one man was fatally shot in the gunfire. Another was hit in the leg and flown to a Modesto hospital. The Merced County Sheriff's Department SWAT Team was called in to check the house. Investigators tell Action News the tenants who lived in the home, kept to themselves. Two officers are now on administrative leave pending the investigation. Police have not released the name of the man who was fatally shot.
