The crash sent the truck careening off Highway 168, near the four-lane around two o'clock pm. The California Highway Patrol says overheated brakes on the truck are to blame.
"The rig was coming down the hill at some point the driver indicated he was trying to down gear, he was in fifth gear and it wasn't having any effect on slowing down the truck," said Sgt. Kevin Acosta. "Some witnesses indicate the brakes had been smoking prior to and the brakes just weren't going to stop that truck and it three-wheeled right off the road."
The driver of the big rig was trapped in the truck -- both he and the passenger were taken by helicopter to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. Their condition is not known. Investigators say they do not suspect speed or alcohol as a factor in the crash.
