Police say 23-year-old Casildo Varbarin killed another man at the Ashtree Apartments on Friday evening after a fight over his girlfriend.
The victim has been identified as 34-year-old Ahjahn Thirakoune.
Police say Varbarin tried to commit suicide before telling authorities about the crime. He is expected to survive his injuries.
The killing was the city's first for 2012.
