Thrift store opens new location in Clovis

FRESNO, Calif.

The Hinds Hospice Thrift Store just opened its doors on Shaw Avenue east of Minnewawa.

It's a new location, but a continuation of a 13-year effort to raise money for Hinds Hospice of Fresno.

Nora Herrington showed up at the Hinds Hospice Thrift Store just after noon on Monday. She shopped at the older location on Shields and Cedar Avenue in Fresno for years. The Clovis store was a welcome change of scenery.

"I have to be careful about going to used bookstores and that sort of thing because of the dust. This store is really clean, the air is nice, it's a brand new store," Herrington said.

The store isn't exactly brand new. The Hinds Hospice Thrift Store took over a former Western Wear Store. Before that, the building was a furniture store.

Manager Mal Sullivan says when hinds hospice approached the realtor about the property they were offered a deal that was too good to refuse. The size of the new store is nearly triple the space of the old location.

Word of the new store spread quickly, even before the doors opened last Thursday morning.

"We had to come in and do some light checks and stuff at seven in the morning, and people were coming in because the sign said 'open Thursday' so when we actually opened at ten o'clock there were over 100 people standing outside the door waiting to get in," Sullivan said.

All of the proceeds from the thrift store support Hinds Hospice of Fresno. Sullivan describes the store as an ongoing fundraiser, six days a week.
