The fire happened around eleven o'clock Thursday morning on Willow Avenue near Winery. The blaze destroyed one unit. Two others are damaged.

Fresno city utility worker Ronnie Watts was working in the area. He says he initially thought someone was barbecuing, before witnesses started hollering for help. That's when Watts jumped into action, dragging the victim out of a burning apartment.

"I just hope he's going to be alright," said Watts. "I was concerned there was somebody else in there, he said my dog and I said anybody else and he said my dog, I was hoping there wasn't anybody else."

Fire officials say the victim walked through smoke and flames to get to the door. He suffered major lung damage and severe burns trying to get out.
