Last week, the Air Force announced budget cuts for 2013. The 144th was mentioned, and state and national leaders immediately addressed the issue.

Senators Feinstein and Boxer sent a letter to the secretary of defense, and congressional leaders from our region are also working to gather support for the 144th.

Major General David Baldwin said closing the base could pose a huge economic loss for the Valley. "That wing brings over a $100 million to the local economy. Salaries, contracts, to the fuel we buy the food the airmen eat, it's very vital for the economy not just Fresno but all of California."

Baldwin says the next step, is a battle of letters. Local congressional leaders are involved, as is the governor, and the National Guard.
