Renee Fleming performance goes on amid strike

FRESNO, Calif.

A last minute orchestra strike wasn't enough to stop world renowned opera singer Renee Fleming from performing at the Saroyan Theatre Tuesday night.

The American Federation Of Musicians president Larry Gardner said the Fresno Grand Opera and Orchestra members could not renew a contract before the start of the show. Members of the orchestra picketed outside of the building and did not perform during the concert. The show was delayed for about forty-five minutes and left audience members baffled as to what had happened.

"What do I want? I want a contract and I want to be treated fairly" said Gardner.

Despite these last second difficulties, opera officials managed to find some musicians to fill in. Union members say they do not know how long their strike will last.
