Fresno Co double fatal crash may be related to copper theft

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif.

It happened around 9:45 a.m. Saturday morning at the intersection of HWY 145 and Shields, north of Kerman. Officers say the driver of a Saturn was driving east on Shields and drove past the stop sign, without stopping. The other car, a 1993 Buick Regal, was going south and hit the Saturn.

That impact caused two people in the Saturn to be ejected, killing them. A third person in the Saturn, as well as both of the people in the Buick, were sent to the hospital with injuries.

The names of the victims have not been released. The Fresno County Sheriff's Department said the Saturn had stolen copper wire in the vehicle. They're looking into who it might have been taken from, and if those suspects have stolen copper wire before.
