Flags at World War II memorial in Visalia stolen

FRESNO, Calif.

The Visalia Veterans Committee came back from the holiday weekend to find a 10x9 foot American flag, and two smaller flags missing from the large World War II mural on south Mooney Boulevard in Visalia.

Veterans say the thieves used box cutters to open up a lock box and steal the flags and all the ropes.

Kevin Gerke, with the Visalia Veterans Committee said, "It's outrageous, there's no good, the flags they aren't worth anything to anybody else for resale value it's the veterans it's those people who fought and drive by this and see this every day."

Vietnam veteran Bob Pineda told Action News, "My father was World War II and I currently have a daughter going to Afghanistan, so it means a lot."

A year ago the American and POW flags were stolen from the same memorial.

The Veterans Committee installed lock boxes at the site and is now considering the installation of security cameras.
