Emergency crews pull man from San Joaquin River

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif.

The victim and two friends were jogging along the river bank and decided to cool off and go for a swim. Witnesses say one of the men swam across the river, went into a pool near some brush, and went under water. The man started calling for help from his friends. His friends tried to pull him out several times, then summoned a park worker for help.

The man's friends and the park worker were eventually able to get man out of the water. The park worker performed C.P.R. on the man for several minutes while a nearby fisherman called 911.

Emergency crews arrived and worked to revive the man for several minutes. They said they were able to get a faint pulse before they transported him to a local hospital.

The victim's name and condition are unknown.

Deputies say Skaggs Bridge Park is a popular swimming spot, but claims about five lives per year.
