Merced students get glimpse into Iditarod

MERCED, Calif.

Tasha Stielstra visited Cruickshank Middle School to talk about teamwork and respect.

She shared some of her experiences racing on a sled dog team and showed a slideshow of her races across Alaska.

Students even learned about what racing is like from a sled dog's point of view.

"It just spreads the world about animal care and dog care and what we do to follow our dreams, you don't know what your dreams are gonna be in the 6th grade. But it might be something cool," Stielstra said.

Stielstra participated in the 2012 Iditarod sled dog race.

The mushers race a team of 12 to 16 dogs for about two weeks from Anchorage, Alaska to Nome battling subzero temperatures.
