The sheriff's office says two deputies were following a parolee wanted in a stalking case, just after 10:00 Tuesday morning.

Detectives say they got near the suspect, close to the intersection of Twilight and Pinnacle, when he started his car's engine and tried to run them over. That's when they opened fire, and he sped away.

Deputies say he crashed his car outside a nearby apartment complex, before breaking into a nearby home.

Action News talked to the home owner who didn't want to appear on camera about the experience.

Several schools were on lockdown including Rivera Middle School and Merced High School. They have since been reopened.

The suspect's identity has not yet been released. He's being treated at a Modesto hospital.

The deputies involved are on administrative leave, pending an investigation.
