Suspect arrested after standoff in Woodville

FRESNO, Calif.

Investigators were first called to the housing development around 6:30 for reports of a shooting. Family members told deputies a woman had been shot and the armed suspect was still inside the residence.

Deputies said they were initially able to make contact with the suspect through a window and the man indicated he wouldn't be taken alive.

A more than three hour standoff followed as deputies set up a command post and called in a SWAT team and negotiator.

A robot equipped with a camera was eventually sent in the home showing a woman that appeared to be deceased and a man breathing heavily next to her. At that point, deputies said they decided to enter the home by force and take the suspect into custody.

The suspect wasn't injured in the incident, but was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Investigators said two adults and a child were also in the home during the shooting, but they were able to escape on their own prior to deputies' arrival on scene.

The relationship between the suspect and victim is unknown, but a woman at the scene could be heard yelling 'mom' as others tried to console her.
