Suspect dies in Merced County 2-by-4 attack

FRESNO, Calif.

It all started when a man flipped his van at State Route 59 and Dickenson Ferry Road south of Merced. When officers arrived the driver had disappeared. Then, they realized the suspect was trying to attack a homeowner up the street with a piece of wood.

The homeowner tried to fight him off -- but in the end -- deputies had to use a taser. When the taser had no effect they sent a K9. And when that didn't work -- a handful of deputies were finally able take him down.

Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin said, "Obviously there was something amiss to take on four officers two from our agency two from Merced again, exhibiting super human strength and did not feel pain from the taser."

The suspect went into cardiac arrest outside the home. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died.
