Fresno's Audra McDonald wins fifth Tony Award

FRESNO, Calif.

Fresno's Audra McDonald won best leading actress in a musical and became the first black actress to ever win five Tony awards.

McDonald was raised in Fresno and trained at The Juilliard School. In past years, McDonald won Tony awards for "Carousel," "Master Class," "ragtime," and "A Raisin in the Sun."

McDonald attended Roosevelt School of the Arts.

Other big awards went to the musical "Once," which won eight trophies and earned bragging rights as the top musical on Broadway. McDonald won for her performance in "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess,"
