Valley woman 1st to contract West Nile in California

FRESNO, Calif.

State health officials don't have information on how the woman contracted the virus -- but say the victim is a 70 year old woman who lives in Kern County. She was hospitalized, but is now recovering.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans and animals by the bite of an infected mosquito, and has been detected in 15 counties, including Fresno and Tulare.
