FDA issues Simply-Thick warning after infant deaths

FRESNO, Calif.

The Food and Drug Administration is warning parents against feeding "Simply-Thick" to infants before 37 weeks or babies who are receiving hospital care or have been discharged from the hospital in the past 30 days. The FDA says seven babies have died after eating the product mixed with infant formula or breast milk.

"Simply-Thick" is a thickening gel designed to help babies who have a hard time swallowing liquids. But heath officials say the gel causes tissue inflammation and may lead to death.
