Preview: FCC Football Rams Used to Expectations

FRESNO, Calif.

"This year's team is a completely different group of guys and we're developing our own chemistry," said Coach Caviglia. "They're a really spirited group of guys. We really like being around them and we're having a lot of fun."

With Saturday's season opener on the horizon, the Rams will lean on a strong defense early, led by former Clovis high standout Donnell Vercher.

"We've all been playing very good as a whole team, especially as a secondary," said Vercher. "Our linebackers are very solid and our defensive linemen are returning too. So we're looking pretty solid on defense."

And on offense, a young group will try to replicate last year's prolific group. Former Central high standout Michael Baker will start at quarterback, but Coach Caviglia says Baker won't be the focal point, at least at the beginning of the year.

"We're going to be able to run the ball," said Coach Caviglia. "We're very strong at the running back position. Mike Baker doesn't have to go out and win the game for us. We have enough people around him to take some of the pressure off him."

Talent across the board: Something never lacking at FCC, and something that has the players excited to get back to the NorCal Championship game.

"Just us as Rams, play like we know how to play," said Vercher. "Play like we've been practicing every day, and all this work that we've put in all summer. I want that to show out here, especially this first game."
