Tracks re-open after Amtrak train crash near Hanford

FRESNO, Calif.

The Amtrak train derailed after it collided with a big rig on Monday at 10th and Kansas Avenues. The southbound Amtrak train, with 169 passengers and four crew members, was heading for Bakersfield. Authorities say at least 30 people were hurt.

Family members picked up some passengers. Buses were brought in to take the other passengers to their destinations.

Hospital officials say most of the injuries were cuts and bruises, but there were some broken bones.

Tuesday morning Kansas Avenue remains closed at the rail crossing while crews repair the crossing arms.

A second train derailed in an accident in the Hanford area on Monday. This crash involved a big rig as well.

The CHP says the truck collided with a freight train at Second and Grangeville Avenue. The crash happened about 17 miles from the Amtrak accident scene. The driver of the big rig suffered minor injuries in that second accident, but he is expected to be okay.
