Almonds take 2nd place in Calif ag value

FRESNO, Calif.

A new university of California report shows the almond crop is now the state's number two farm commodity. The report shows the almond crop was valued at nearly $4-billion last year.

Milk is still number one in value, but the grape crop moved down to the number three spot. Ag officials say the popularity of almonds has prompted farmers to plant more.

UC researchers say farmers have nearly doubled the amount of almonds they can produce on each acre of land, thanks to improved irrigation and pest-control methods.
