Dec. 18 Ag Report

FRESNO, Calif.

Farmers in the Northern California foothills say this year's Mountain Mandarin crop looks very good.

Mandarins grown at higher elevations of Sacramento are called Mountain Mandarins.

The mandarins are known for their larger-than-average size.

The Mountain Mandarin harvest started about a month ago, a few weeks earlier than usual, and is expected to last through January.

Growers describe this year's crop as plentiful and very sweet.

A massive do-over in Napa Valley is creating a grape plant shortage across California.

A massive replanting in Napa Valley's vineyards is so widespread it's now causing a critical shortage of grapevine root stock.

Ag officials are replacing aging Cabernet vines planted after the deadly bacteria outbreak across Napa Valley in the 80s.

With demand growing strong growers are taking the opportunity to replace old vines with new ones better suited for the climate.

All of this activity caught commercial nurseries across the country in short supply.

Some are sold out for next year and are taking orders for 2014 and beyond.
