Peter Mel named winner at Mavericks Invitational

FRESNO, Calif.

Twenty-four of the world's best surfers went up against strong currents, frigid waters, and jagged rocks to ride the waves at Half Moon Bay. This is the first time the competition has been held since 2010, when dozens of spectators were injured after waves crashed into the crowd.

The spot has earned a nasty reputation after Mark Foo, a legendary big-wave surfer from Hawaii died while surfing Mavericks in 1994. This morning's waves weren't quite as big as expected though.

Santa Cruz native Peter Mel was named the winner Sunday evening.
