The single-engine Piper Cherokee aircraft went down in a field near Walnut and Church just after noon Monday and stopped just yards from hitting a power pole.
The plane belongs to Mazzei Flying Service which runs an international flight school out of the Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
Pilot Robert Jones says he and a student from Taiwan were gearing up to land at Chandler Airport - when the engine suddenly stopped.
"Took the controls, switched fuel tanks and saw a field to my left," said Jones. "The engine never came back on so I said this is as best place as any. We can't make the runway."
Jones, who has been flying for 16 years, and his student, who has his private pilot license were not injured in the forced landing. They believe there was a problem with the fuel tank which then caused the engine to malfunction.
A pilot was able to start it, and the owner flew it off the field.
