Starting next month, Japan will allow imported beef from cows up to 30 months old. That's up from the current 20-month age limit.
The move is also more in line with international standards and is expected to cover 90 percent of the beef processed in the U.S. Japan banned U.S. beef imports in 2003 after mad-cow disease scare.
