Loran "Butch" Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler were shot and killed as they approached a home to investigate a sexual assault case. Baker has been with the Santa Cruz Police Department since 1985, after graduating from Fresno City College's police academy the year before.
The suspect, Jeremy Peter Goulet, 35, was accused of breaking into a co-workers home and making sexual advances. Goulet allegedly shot the officers as they were at his doorstep. He was killed after other officers arrived at the scene.
Butler is a ten year veteran of the force, who is survived by her partner and two young sons. Baker is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son.
