Government to pay $2.4m in water settlement

FRESNO, Calif.

A federal judge has ordered the government to pay $2.4 million for breaching a water delivery contract in the early 1980's.

The deal was supposed to deliver water from a dam on the Stanislaus River to a group of irrigators and other water users. However, the verdict falls short of the $43 million in damages sought by the Stockton East Water District and Central San Joaquin Water Conservation District for the breach.
