A bill by State Senator Mark Leno of San Francisco would require state and local authorities to get a warrant before asking email service providers like Google and Yahoo to hand over your emails.

Current law says emails are fair game if they've already been opened or they're more than six months old.

Leno wants to clearly define the line in California, saying electronic communications should be no different than paper communications, which authorities cannot access without a warrant.
