Merced bus battle is temporarily over

MERCED, Calif.

On Wednesday, the Merced Union High School District voted to restore four morning bus routes that were previously cut due to financial setbacks.

The transportation cuts went into effect last spring. Students who lived within a five mile radius of their high school had to walk, catch a ride, or take the city bus to school. But parents rallied to get officials to bring the buses back.

"We're still under financial constraints but no longer the constraints we were prior to November 6th," said Leonard Kahn, Assistant Superintendent with MUHSD.

Board officials say they were able to get the bargaining unit to amend its contract and hire part-time bus drivers.

The four bus routes will be reinstated next month when students return from Spring Break.
